A New Interdenominational
Curriculum
Representatives from ten Christian denominations have developed
curriculum materials about Christian unity. These materials are
designed for use as a four-hour workshop and include a written
Leader's Guide with interactive video segments. This curriculum,
entitled One in the Bond of Love, is now available.
One in the Bond of Love was originally created for use
in Methodist congregations by the Rev. Dr. Jean Hawxhurst and
the KY Conference of the UMC Commission on Christian Unity and
Interreligious concerns. The Methodist version of this curriculum
is currently in widespread use by United Methodists around the
Commonwealth and is receiving national attention and acclamation.
Rev. Hawxhurst and the UMC Commission on Christian Unity gave
permission to the Kentucky Council of Churches to modify the
One in the Bond of Love materials for use beyond United
Methodist congregations.
The new version preserves the goals of the original. The workshop
helps participants 1) recognize our call as Christians to live
out our unity in Christ so that all the world might believe;
2) develop an understanding of the ecumenical spirit as an integral
part of our Christian heritage; 3) affirm God's gift of grace
that has made us one through Christ; and 4) to increase local
congregations' awareness of ways to be involved in ecumenical
ministry.
This
curriculum serves individual congregations by helping them accomplish
six things. Upon completing the One in the Bond of Love
workshop, participants should be able to
1) identify the scriptural basis for ecumenism;
2) describe what it means to be an ecumenical congregation;
3) explain why Christians have always been committed to ecumenism;
4) discuss why it is important to be an ecumenical congregation;
5) relate ecumenical issues to real-life situations;
6) determine two new ecumenical ministries for the upcoming year.
The curriculum can be implemented in four one-hour sessions,
two two-hour sessions, or one four-hour session. You can obtain
the new One in the Bond of Love workshop materials - which
include a leader's guide, a participant's packet, rights to reproduce
the participant packet, and a video cassette - for $19.95 plus
$5.00 shipping and handling.
