The 53rd Annual Assembly
of the Kentucky Council of Churches

October 26-27, 2000
Covenant United Methodist Church
Middlesboro, Kentucky

Evangelism in a World of Diversity:
The Ecumenical Test

Workshops at 2000's assembly included:

Beyond Left and Right: A New Vision for Overcoming Poverty in America: This workshop will be presented by Dr. Ron Sider, author of a number of important books on this theme, including Just Generosity: A New Vision for Overcoming Poverty in America; Living Like Jesus; and Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger. Dr. Sider is also president of Evangelicals for Social Action and Professor of Theology and Culture at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Interfaith Relations as a Task of Discipleship: Led by Dr. Jay Rock, Director of Interfaith Relations of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., the title is self-explanatory. An ordained Presbyterian Minister, Dr. Rock is responsible for Christian-Jewish, Christian-Muslim, and Christian-Buddhist concerns. The Interfaith Relations Commission of the NCCCUSA works with and on behalf of the churches to strengthen relations between Christians and people of other faiths through study, dialogue, the development of cooperative programs and the sharing of information and resources.

Being Christian in a World of Diversity: The Rev. Dirk Ficca, also a Presbyterian minister, will lead this workshop. The Rev. Ficca serves as the Executive Director of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions, a non-profit, non-sectarian organization fostering interreligious encounter, dialogue and cooperative common action in metropolitan Chicago and around the world.

Minding Our Ecumenical Manners: Evangelism, Not Proselytism: The Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper, Executive Director of the KCC, will lead this workshop, exploring the practical issues of being evangelistic, responding to the great commission, at the same time that we seek relate to persons of other faith in a Christ-like fashion.
Truth Claims and Ecumenical Relations: The Rev. Dr. Jude Weisenbeck, ecumenical officer for the Archdiocese of Louisville, and the Rev. Jean Hawxhurst, Associate Minister of Christ United Methodist Church, Louisville will share their perspectives on the meaning and implications of the latest document from the Vatican, "Dominus Iesus: On the Unicity and Salvific Universality of Jesus Christ and the Church." The document (approximately 19 pages) is available on the web at: www.nccbuscc.org/pope/doctrineoffaith.htm. It would help participants of this workshop to read the document prior to the Assembly.
Religion in the Public Square: [tentative, depending on the availability of leadership] This workshop will address issues of religious liberty and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and why religious people should care that the separation of church and state be maintained.

Visitors are always welcome to attend the Assembly as guests and observers. Please phone the office of the KCC at 859-269-7715 if you would like to attend.
